Morning: Clinical Assessment Workshop

As the role of the pharmacist expands, so too does the need for in-depth consultations with patients. By conducting in-depth consultations, pharmacists can gain further information required to give tailored medication management advice. Whether in a pharmacy, a GP practice or in the patient’s home, these consultations may require clinical examinations and simple procedures to be conducted. This interactive workshop will help you develop the skills required to conduct a clinical assessment, and will cover the general approaches to be observed before any clinical examination or procedure, processes to follow and documentation requirements.

Afternoon: Wound Care Workshop

Session 1: Simple lacerations, burns and grazes

Pharmacies are often the first point-of-call for people seeking dressings or first aid for minor skin wounds. There are many available dressing and techniques for managing minor skin wounds. This workshop will help you assess minor wounds to determine whether there is a risk of infection, deeper structural damage or other factors that can impair wound healing. This workshop will also cover choosing the right dressing type to aid wound healing and reduce the risk of complications.

Session 2: Chronic wounds: pressure sores and ulcers

The prevalence of chronic wounds including pressure sores and leg ulcers in the community is high. Many people have leg ulcers that do not heal. While under the care of another health professional, these patients are likely to visit pharmacies for advice on dressings or to seek other health care. This interactive workshop will help you to support patients to choose correct dressings, manage their own dressings and avoid further chronic wounds. You’ll also learn about medicines that can contribute to chronic wounds, ways to identify and prevent chronic wounds in their early stages and signs a patient might need urgent referral.
