GP Pharmacists Symposium | 28 May 2026

Advancing the role of pharmacists in general practice

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) invites pharmacists, general practitioners, and health system leaders to come together in 2026 for the GP Pharmacists Symposium - a national forum dedicated to strengthening collaboration between pharmacists and general practice teams.

Building on the success of the inaugural PSA-hosted symposium, this event brings together leading voices from pharmacy, medicine, and primary care to explore the evolving role of pharmacists in general practice and the real-world impact of multidisciplinary models of care.

Why attend?

Australia’s health system is facing growing pressure from chronic disease and medicine-related harm, with an estimated 250,000 hospital admissions each year linked to medication-related problems. The GP–Pharmacists Symposium provides a vital platform to address these challenges through collaboration, innovation, and shared learning.

What to expect

  • Insightful discussions on medicine safety and quality use of medicines
  • Practical perspectives on embedding pharmacists within general practice
  • Dialogue between pharmacy and medical leaders on collaborative care models
  • Policy and workforce updates shaping the future of general practice pharmacy

A forum for collaboration

The symposium program will feature expert speakers and panel discussions involving leaders from pharmacy and medical organisations, including PSA representatives and key stakeholders across general practice. These conversations will focus on how pharmacists and GPs can work together more effectively to deliver truly patient-centred care.

PSA’s leadership continues to champion multidisciplinary care as a cornerstone of a sustainable health system, advocating for workforce models that support general practices to grow and integrate pharmacists into their teams.

Driving sustainable change

The GP Pharmacists Symposium reflects PSA’s long-standing commitment to supporting pharmacists in general practice - from early pilot programs with Primary Health Networks to the development of best-practice frameworks and national advocacy.

PSA continues to call for long-term, sustainable funding to support these roles, including strengthening mechanisms such as the Workforce Incentive Program to ensure pharmacists are properly embedded within general practice teams.
