Long-acting injectable buprenorphine (LAIB) is an effective and convenient treatment for opioid dependence, offering significant advantages for both patients and healthcare providers. With its improved safety profile, simpler dosing regimen, and ease of administration, LAIB presents a valuable opportunity for pharmacists to expand their role in opioid treatment. This workshop will provide pharmacists with the knowledge and practical skills needed to set up and operate an LAIB administration service, while also enhancing communication strategies with patients and demonstrating proper administration techniques. The workshop will begin with an educational session on how to set up and run an LAIB service within a pharmacy or clinical setting. This will include an overview of the infrastructure required, the legal and regulatory framework, and strategies for collaborating with opioid treatment prescribers to ensure effective patient care. Following this, a panel discussion will focus on best practices for communicating with patients who are opioid dependent, with an emphasis on overcoming stigma, building trust, and supporting patient adherence to LAIB therapy. Finally, a hands-on practical demonstration will guide participants through the correct technique for administering LAIB, highlighting any differences between available formulations and ensuring safe, effective injection practices.   Learning objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: - Describe the operation of an LAIB administration service, ensuring effective integration with relevant prescribers. - Discuss appropriate communication strategies to engage with and support patients who are opioid dependent. - Demonstrate correct administration techniques for various LAIB products, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes.
