Synopsis

This session will describe what atrial fibrillation is and will discuss the various treatment options including rate control, rhythm control and ablation. It will also explain why patients with atrial fibrillation are at risk of suffering an ischaemic stroke and the role of anticoagulants in the treatment of atrial fibrillation. It will also address how pharmacists can help people identify atrial fibrillation, and how they can best counsel patients on the appropriate use of their atrial fibrillation medicines.

Learning objectives:

1. Discuss the treatment strategies for atrial fibrillation, including rate control, rhythm control, and ablation.

2. Explain the role of anticoagulants in stroke prevention.

3. Describe the role of pharmacists in managing atrial fibrillation.
