Synopsis:

Are we too dependent on medicines for sleep health? Why are 90% of people with insomnia being managed in primary care with potentially harmful and addictive sedative-hypnotic medicines when Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is the recommended 'first-line' management? This workshop will present the facts about insomnia; why and how it develops, and the pivotal role of pharmacists despite the limited role for medicines. We will explore how pharmacists can better support patients to approach evidenced-based non-pharmacological treatments that provide sustained improvements in insomnia symptoms.

Learning objectives:

1. Discuss the key principles of insomnia assessment

2. Describe how to appropriately initiate conversations with patients about insomnia

3. Identify the evidence supporting the use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBTi)

4. Discuss the use and limitations of medicines in the management of insomnia

Competency Standards (2016): 1.5, 2.2, 3.2, 3.3, 3.5, 3.6.
