Details

Skin disorders are a common yet represent a multidimensional health challenge affecting all ages and racial groups. Interestingly, skin disorders rank sixth amongst disease groups for non-fatal disease burden. Individuals living with skin disorders are associated with a range of social, economic and psychological impacts. Unsurprisingly, many individuals living with chronic skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis experience higher levels of morbidity; living with discomfort, loneliness, depressive symptoms and reduced quality of life. An estimated 1 million Australians are living with long term skin disorders, including acne, cellulitis, dermatitis and rosacea. Challenges related to accessing appropriate health care, waiting times, costs and stigmatisation/discrimination impact an individual’s ability to access appropriate management and advice for skin disorders. There is a collective opportunity for pharmacists to improve their understanding of skin disorders and optimise the management and care to improve the health and well-being of the community. During this session we will discuss how to appropriately assess a range of different skin disorders amongst different population groups and how we can optimise patient consultations to limit the impact of symptoms. We will discuss the role of pharmacists, the collaborative nature of skin management and appropriate support and referral strategies to optimise health outcomes. Learning objectives At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Outline a logical, sequential approach to the management and care of skin disorders. 2. Discuss the role of pharmacists in supporting individuals living with skin disorders. 3. Outline the strategies to optimise patient consultation and management. Competency standards: 1.5, 2.3, 3.1, 3.5, 3.6
