Tobacco smoking and vaping are the global leading cause of avoidable premature death. In Australia, smoking is responsible for 13% of deaths and 8.6% of the total disease burden. “A silent killer” responsible for multi-organ damage associated with a range of respiratory conditions including asthma and bronchitis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and ocular diseases. Whilst vaping was once considered a ‘safer’ alternative to traditional tobacco smoking, vaping is associated with cardiovascular and respiratory complications.
Massive public health campaigns urging people to stop smoking have driven smoking rates to gradually decline in Australia. Yet smoking rates are up to five times higher in disadvantaged population groups. However, vaping rates are gradually increasing, further driving nicotine use.
So, why is it so hard to just stop smoking or vaping? Especially as the benefits of quitting smoking and vaping are tremendous; evident within hours of quitting. We need to use a multi-faceted approach is to successfully support individuals to quit smoking and vaping. Pharmacists play a critical role in supporting individuals in their quit journeys offering behavioural support and evidence-based pharmacotherapy. In this session, we will explore the common obstacles experienced by both patients and health professionals supporting the smoking cessation process. We will discuss evidence-based solutions to ideally support patients including innovative approaches to pharmacotherapy, including nicotine replacement therapy.
