The societal understanding and awareness of neuro-identities is quickly evolving. Neurodiversity refers to naturally occurring disparities in the human mind amongst the population, the way people’s mind words. Common neurodiverse conditions include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, autism and dyspraxia. Research reports that approximately 15-20% of the global population is neurodiverse, and up to 1.5 % of the global population is on the autism spectrum. Whilst neurodivergent disorders differ in the presentation and symptoms, these conditions may be characterised by social, language, speech, communication and learning challenges. Whilst neurodiversity is not a new concept in the world of medicine and science, there has been a rise in diagnosis’ in the recent decade. This can be attributed to a range of factors including increased awareness and diagnostic assessments, increased access to support and resources and ongoing research and development. Greater awareness of neurodiversity has enabled ample opportunities for pharmacists to support neurodiverse patients through the provision of medicines information, assessment of response to therapy, new treatment approaches, communication with other health providers and referral to support services. Join our neurodiversity expert to explore the challenges experienced by neurodiverse patients and the role of medicines in managing neurodiverse patients. We will discuss common issues associated with managing medicines in neurodiverse patients and strategies to ensure adherence.
