Are we too dependent on medicines for sleep health? Why are 90% of people with insomnia being managed in primary care with potentially harmful and addictive sedative-hypnotic medicines (e.g. benzodiazepines, ‘z-drugs’, antidepressants, antipsychotics) when Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is 'first-line' management. High quality evidence supports the use of CBT-I to improve insomnia, mental health and quality of life. This workshop will delve into the management of insomnia using a holisitic approach and support patients with insomnia, we will discuss the evidence for CBT-I and other sleep hygiene measures that can be used for people with insomnia. Learning objectives 1. Discuss the key principles of insomnia assessment 2. Describe how to appropriately initiate conversations with patients about insomnia 3. Recognise the evidence supporting the use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBTi) 4. Discuss the use and limitations of medicines in the management of insomnia 1.1, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.4, 3.2, 3.3, 3.5, 3.6.

Biography

Christopher Gordon is an Associate Professor at Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University and the Research Leader for insomnia and chronobiology research at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. He leads a multidisciplinary program of research aimed at improving sleep health for adults with a focus on understanding the neurobiology of insomnia and investigating new insomnia treatment pathways.

Biography

Professor Saini is a high throughput researcher who has led and collaborated in implementing and evaluating several successful community pharmacy-based service trials in respiratory and sleep health. She has received AUD 21.9 million in competitive national/international research grants as an investigator from a diverse range of funding bodies. She was also a recipient of an NHMRC Translating Research into Practice Fellowship (2017-2019). She has over 200 published peer reviewed research articles, over 50 professional journal articles and has presented in more than 150 national/international research conferences. She has led, supervised, and collaborated in research in international settings with an interest to develop and evaluate primary care health models for respiratory disease in varied health systems and socio-cultural settings. She has supervised to completion 35 higher degree research candidates, building research capacity for future pharmacy practice research. She is also a passionate pharmacy educator having developed many training materials around sleep and respiratory health for pharmacists over the previous two decades.
