Nausea refers to the unpleasant feeling of the need to vomit whereas vomiting refers to the forceful ejection reflex of the contents of the stomach and upper digestive tract. Vomiting may be caused by a range of factors including bacterial infection (such as salmonella), viral infections (such as norovirus) or non-gastro-intestinal infections. Alternatively, nausea and vomiting may be related to symptoms of other co-morbidities and side effects of medicines. During this session, we will discuss the clinical features and management strategies of nausea and vomiting. We will discuss how to manage any other symptoms that present with nausea and vomiting and when to refer patients to seek further medical assistance. Learning objectives At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Outline common causes of nausea and vomiting. 2. Discuss common management strategies, including the use of antiemetics, to care for individuals experiencing nausea and vomiting. 3. Describe the key practice points to provide patients to help them manage nausea and vomiting. Competency standards: 1.3, 2.1, 3.1, 3.5, 3.6

Biography

Mrs Anna Barwick is a practising pharmacist, diabetes educator, asthma educator, researcher, and pharmacist immuniser. She holds a Master of Clinical Pharmacy and is currently working on her PhD in telehealth at the University of Queensland. Mrs Barwick has been recognised as the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia 2021 NSW Pharmacist of the Year, the 2022 Regional Woman and NSW Premier's Woman of the Year. Her research interests focus on rural health and women’s health. Anna has extensive board and committee experience, including as a past member of the NSW Poisons Advisory Committee. Anna was also a member of the NSW Health Regional Health Ministerial Advisory Panel member.
