In the dynamic world of pharmacy practice, professionals often encounter situations where asking tough questions is necessary but uncomfortable. Whether it's discussing personal health matters, sensitive topics, or addressing misconceptions, effective communication skills are essential. This workshop aims to equip pharmacy practitioners with the confidence, strategies, and sensitivity to navigate challenging conversations. Learning objectives: • Discuss the importance of addressing tough questions in pharmacy practice. • Develop strategies for framing and asking tough questions sensitively. • Explain how to handle emotional responses from patients or clients. Competency standards: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.3

Biography

Olivia is an early career pharmacist practising at Capital Chemist Kambah in the ACT. Olivia graduated from the University of Canberra in 2016 and has since completed further qualifications in Mental Health, Palliative Care and Diabetes Management and Education, most recently qualifying as a Credentialled Diabetes Educator. Olivia is President of the PSA ACT Branch Committee, and sits on the Pharmaceutical Defence Limited ACT/NSW Local Advisory Committee. Olivia's advocacy efforts focus around patient access to services, pharmacist scope of practice and risk management in practice. Olivia is involved with intern and student education ranging from facilitating ITP sessions to contributing to the APC Examinations team. Olivia is a passionate and enthusiastic about advocating for the best patient care possible, ensuring evidence-based, holistic and judgement-free care is provided throughout her practice.

Biography

Peter Guthrey holds the position of Senior Pharmacist, Strategic Policy at the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. Peter supports policy development, advocacy activities, regulatory submissions and practice advice. Peter has driven key PSA policy work, including Pharmacists in 2023, medicine safety agenda and Australian Pharmacist. Peter has over 16 years’ experience in pharmacy policy, regulation, advocacy, communications & media, quality management and community pharmacy practice. Peter maintains practice as a community pharmacist, working in an after-hours role at Melbourne’s Ascot Vale Pharmacy, where he is a pharmacist vaccinator.

Biography

Monique is an early career Community Pharmacist specialising in medicinal cannabis. She began her career nearly 10 years ago as an assistant in her local pharmacy on the northwest coast of Tasmania at 16 years old. After moving to Hobart, she graduated from the University of Tasmania with applied Honours and now works at Complete Care Pharmacy Rosny Park. There, she focuses on compounding medicinal cannabis and providing comprehensive health solutions. She collaborates with allied health professionals at her pharmacy and holds a position on the national PSA Early Career Pharmacist CSI group, emphasizing education and mentoring in her field. Her passion is helping patients in medicinal cannabis and all aspects of community pharmacy, however and wherever she can.

Biography

Raymond is an early career pharmacist with many different hats as a registered pharmacist. Since registering in late 2020, Raymond has practiced as a professional care community pharmacist, University of South Australia tutor (in various courses), PSA ITP workshop facilitator, accredited consultant pharmacist (establishing Pill Box Education as his consultancy practice), PSA practice support pharmacist and is looking into becoming an aged care onsite pharmacist (ACOP). Previously awarded the 2019 PSA Gold Medal and most recently the SA/NT PSA Early career pharmacist award and sitting as the acting ECP representative observer on the PSA SA/NT branch commitee and education and mentor lead on the PSA ECP CSI leadership group, Raymond has a strong passion for supporting education, mentorship and professional development for all pharmacists in all settings and stages.
