Clinical laboratory testing is conducted for a range of therapeutic, prognostic, diagnostic and psychosocial purposes. Such testing is useful for clinicians for diagnostic and assessment purposes, evaluate individual progress of bodily functions, establish baseline levels and monitor treatment or disease progression. Subsequently, the field of health and medicine relies heavily on access to laboratory testing to facilitate decision making.
The importance of understanding the principles of laboratory testing for patients is of particular importance due to the increased interprofessional collaboration and multi-disciplinary teams managing patient care. Appropriate selection of the most rational laboratory testing is a critical component to optimise patient care, safety and efficiency of health systems. During this session we will discuss the the role of laboratory testing to facilitate clinical decision making, including therapeutic drug monitoring, screening and toxicology. We will discuss the role of pharmacists in interpreting laboratory data, the accuracy and limitations of results.

Biography
Natalie has a background working in the acute sector prior to becoming an accredited pharmacist in 2010. As Head of Clinical Excellence, Governance and Quality for Embedded Health Solutions, she leads a team of over 90 pharmacists. Natalie is dedicated to improving medication management especially in the elderly by helping rationalise prescribing of medications in this group and educating health care professionals. Natalie focuses on the Quality Use of Medicines and sits on several Clinical Governance Committees and Corporate Medication Advisory Committees providing insights into QUM in the aged care sector.
