As the landscape of healthcare evolves, so does the role of pharmacists in patient care, particularly in the realm of prescribing authority. This session invites attendees on an enlightening journey across the globe where we compare pharmacist prescribing approaches across the globe with Australia. This session will begin by broadening the horizons and showcasing international perspectives from countries that have embraced pharmacist prescribing, highlighting the diversity of models, from independent to collaborative practices, and their impact on healthcare systems and patient outcomes. We will then delve into pharmacist prescribing in Australia, taking a look at where we were and how far we have come with the current pharmacist prescribing trials and models. Through comparative analysis, this session will foster a rich discussion on how different countries navigate the complexities of expanding pharmacists' roles and what we can both teach and learn from each other in this global exchange. Participants will gain insights into the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from our overseas colleagues as we engage attendees to envision the future of pharmacist prescribing in Australia. Join us to contribute to a forward-thinking dialogue that shapes the future of healthcare delivery. Learning objectives At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Biography

Fabio De Rango graduated from the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto in 1999. After graduation he joined Shoppers Drug Mart as a staff pharmacist and acquired his first store in 2002. He now owns and operates three locations in Oakville and Burlington. In addition to operating multiple locations, Fabio employs his unique background in retail pharmacy to his roles as a Clinical Instructor with the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, Preceptor for the University of Toronto Pharm D program, Preceptor for the Ontario College of Pharmacists, Guest Lecturer at the University of Toronto and University of Waterloo, and globally as a working member of iPACT (International Pharmacists Anticoagulation Care Task Force). iPACT has published many community and clinical based research papers including international guidelines in the area of anticoagulation and point of care screening/testing. Fabio’s passion, however, is with Diabetes and as such he is also a CDE (certified diabetes educator). Fabio believes that because of the accessibility and role of the pharmacist in the Health Care System, retail pharmacy has a unique advantage and obligation to help in the screening of diabetes, prevention of diabetes and in the management of those suffering from diabetes. Currently, Fabio employs an A1C and cholesterol screening program, Heart Health assessments, Atrial Fibrillation screening program, Pharmacogenomics screening program, Strep Throat Screening Program, Insulin Start Up Program, and weekly diabetic, nutritional and physiotherapy clinics at his locations. In 2008, Fabio received the Shoppers Drug Mart Model Store Award, and the Ontario Pharmacist Association (OPA) JMJ Award. In 2012, Fabio was named Associate Owner of the Year Ontario West for Shoppers Drug Mart. Fabio has also won the Reader’s Choice Award for best pharmacist in Oakville/Burlington 14 years in a row 2011-2024. In 2024, Fabio opened Canada’s first Future of Pharmacy for Shoppers Drug Mart which contributed to winning his first National Trail Blazer award. As illustrated by the OPA JMJ award, Fabio is also heavily involved within his community as a Girls Minor Hockey Coach, conducts community and hospital presentations, organized an outreach project for mentally ill patients to participate in a weekly exercise program at the YMCA, project lead for Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women raising over $1,000,000 for women;s mental health, organized an Adopt A School program where he speaks to elementary schools regarding the safety of medications and key contributor to Jack’s Lemonade Charity for children suffering from cancer. His locations also sponsor Syrian and Afghan , refugee families who have taken up residence in Oakville.

Biography

Therese Lambert is a dedicated and accomplished professional, making significant contributions to the field of pharmacy. As the proud owner of TerryWhite Chemmart Sarina, she has established herself as a leader in the community, committed to delivering exceptional patient care. Therese embarked on her academic journey at James Cook University, where she successfully completed her Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. Her passion for the field led her to not only excel in her own practice but also to contribute to the education of future pharmacists as an academic tutor at James Cook University School of Pharmacy. A fervent advocate for rural and regional health, Therese is deeply committed to advancing the scope of practice for pharmacists. Therese has recently become one of the first pharmacist prescribers in Australia, participating in the North Queensland Community Pharmacy Extended Scope of Practice Trial to help improve health outcomes in her community.

Biography

Laura Wilson FRPharmS Laura is the Director for Scotland at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Laura comes from a community background where she spent 14 years as a pharmacy manager. With a special interest in addiction and mental health, Laura gained her independent prescribing qualification in psychiatry in 2008. Since then, she has prescribed in various roles, most recently in addiction services, prescribing for patients with opiate addiction. Laura spent 7 years of her career as an Advanced Pharmacist in Addictions. Some highlights from that time include being a member of HM inspectorate of Prisons for Scotland and spending 2 years in education as a teacher practitioner at Strathclyde University. Laura joined the RPS in March 2021 as Policy and Practice Lead before becoming Director in January 2023. She has also taken leadership roles within the organisation on their Sustainability, Health inequalities and Independent Prescribing workstreams on a GB basis.
