Pain is considered a mammoth health challenge across the globe, impacting individuals of all population groups, affecting 20% of adults. Interestingly, 10% of adults are diagnosed with chronic pain each year internationally. In Australia, pain is one of the fastest growing medical conditions, with over 3.37 million Australians living with chronic pain. Individuals living with pain may be experiencing acute, chronic or intermittent pain, or all three, experiencing a significant reduction in quality of life, morbidity and mortality. Pain has the potential to impact a person physically, emotionally, socially and psychologically. The financial cost of pain in Australia is colossal; the financial cost of chronic pain in Australia is estimated $144.10 billion. Successful pain management warrants fewer GP visits and specialist referral, improved self-esteem, higher levels of employment and overall improved quality of life. Pharmacists can collaborate and support the care and management of individuals living with pain. During this session, we will discuss the role of pharmacists in optimising pain management including medicines selection, medicines information, deprescribing and pain education. We will discuss the assessment and management tools available to support patients. Learning objectives 1. Describe the principles of pain management 2. Biography

Karalyn is a community pharmacist and a consultant pharmacist. Karalyn performs locum services, medication reviews and delivers quality use of medication programs mainly in rural and regional Australia. Karalyn has a strong interest in immunisation and provision of injectables in community pharmacy, pain management, asthma and COPD, aged care, wound care, travel medicine , chronic disease programs and the health of aboriginal, Torres Strait and South Sea Islander people. Karalyn is credentialed in Mental Health First Aid, and she provides immunisation and vaccination services as a community pharmacist. Karalyn is a prolific writer and provides articles relating to disease management and pharmacy services in both written, on line programs and podcasts. Karalyn is a provider and presenter for the PainWise program.
