Details
Medicine shortages continue to impact patient care across Australia, requiring pharmacists to confidently navigate regulatory pathways that support safe and timely access to therapy. This session provides practical education on the appropriate use of the Special Access Scheme (SAS) and Section 19A arrangements during medicine shortages, with a strong focus on compliance with TGA requirements.
Participants will be guided through how and when SAS and Section 19A apply, common pitfalls to avoid, and how to locate and interpret relevant information on the TGA website. The session will support pharmacists to make informed, defensible decisions that align with regulatory expectations while maintaining continuity of care for patients.
Learning objectives:

• Describe the key regulatory requirements and professional responsibilities associated with SAS and Section 19A use
• Recognise common risks and compliance issues when managing shortages using these pathways
