In this session, we will bring you up to speed with some new medicines recently registered in Australia. An overview of these medicines including evidence for use, indications, contraindications, dose, and adverse effects will be discussed. Learning objectives: - Identify medicines that have been recently approved for use in Australia. - Discuss the indications, mechanism of action, evidence of efficacy and the safety of recently approved medicines. Competency standards (2016): 1.4, 1.5, 3.5

New medicines update

Biography

A/Prof David Newby is Associate Professor in Pharmacy, in the School of Biomedical Science and Pharmacy at the University of Newcastle. He was a foundation academic in Australia’s first Master of Pharmacy Program at the University of Newcastle, and teaches pharmacotherapy courses into the current Bachelor of Pharmacy program. A/Prof Newby has been awarded both local and National teaching awards for his teaching in evidence-based practice and is a co-author of Australia’s first Community Pharmacy textbook. He has worked with the World Health Organisation for over twenty years and was the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Pharmacoeconomics and Rational Pharmacotherapy. A/Prof Newby was appointed as a member of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) in 2012, and was made a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia in 2018 in recognition of his service to the profession.
