Emeritus Prof Jeff Hughes
Details
Neuropathic pain affects around 7% to 10% of the general adult population worldwide and remains challenging to manage, with variable presentations and often limited response to treatment. For many, management can feel like trial and error rather than a clear, structured approach.
This session will define what neuropathic pain is and its different forms, provide an overview of the evidenced-base management of neuropathic pain and the place of multidisciplinary care and future initiatives.
Learning objectives:
- Identify what neuropathic is and describe its common features
- Discuss treatment options based on their efficacy (NNT) and safety (NNH) taking into consideration the underlying cause of the pain
- Discuss the rationale for phenotyping neuropathic pain in the personalisation of its management
Competency Standards (2016): 1.6, 3.3, 3.5
