Details

Osteoporosis significantly impacts individuals and health systems, with fragility fractures leading to pain, loss of function, psychological consequences and substantial healthcare costs. This session provides a practical update on the assessment and management of osteoporosis, aligned with the 2024 RACGP guideline. The session will review fracture risk assessment in clinical practice and how overall risk informs treatment decisions in people over 50 years of age with and without prior fractures. Management strategies across key patient groups will be discussed, including post-menopausal women, people with recent fractures, and those receiving long term glucocorticoids. The session will also address the role of antiresorptive and anabolic therapies, sequencing of treatment, monitoring requirements, and management of long term therapy, including rare adverse effects and decisions around treatment duration. Learning Objectives 1. Discuss fracture risk assessment tools and their application in clinical practice 2. Recognise the appropriateness and comparative medication options in patients with and without a history of fracture 3. Describe the effectiveness of treatment after major osteoporotic fracture and identify patients at high risk of further fracture 4. Evaluate osteoporosis treatment success and drug failure as well as implications for future care Competency Standards (2016): 3.1, 3.3, 3.5
