Details
Type 2 diabetes remains one of the leading causes of chronic kidney disease in Australia, with many people experiencing progressive kidney damage long before symptoms appear. While glycaemic control remains important, growing evidence highlights the need to focus on preserving kidney function early in the course of disease.
This session will explore the mechanisms linking type 2 diabetes and progressive kidney dysfunction, including hyperfiltration, inflammation and albuminuria. It will also examine the role of pharmacotherapy in slowing kidney disease progression and supporting long-term renal outcomes. Through discussion of current evidence and treatment considerations, pharmacists will gain a clearer understanding of when and how medicines can be used to protect kidney function in people living with type 2 diabetes.
Learning Objectives:
• Describe the mechanisms linking type 2 diabetes with progressive kidney dysfunction.
• Discuss when pharmacotherapy may be recommended to help preserve kidney function in people living with type 2 diabetes.
Competency Standards (2016): 1.6, 3.1, 3.5, 3.6
