Overview

Dr Manya Angley, Deborah Hawthorne and Yvette McGrath

Details

Despite strong evidence supporting the four key pillars of heart failure (HF) treatment—ARNIs, beta-blockers, MRAs, and SGLT2 inhibitors—many patients remain sub-optimally managed. Challenges such as therapeutic inertia, adherence barriers, and healthcare inefficiencies contribute to poor outcomes. Innovative approaches are emerging to address these gaps, offering new ways to enhance medicine optimisation and individualised care. This session explores why HF management falls short and how emerging strategies can improve quality use of medicines. Learning Objectives - Describe the four pillars of heart failure management, including their key roles, clinical benefits, and relevant guidelines. - Identify common barriers to optimal heart failure care. - Recognise gaps in current approaches to heart failure management. - Discuss future strategies to improve guideline adherence and enhance patient outcomes in heart failure management. Competency standards (2016): 1.6, 3.1, 3.2, 3.5
