This session will cover the effects of uncontrolled diabetes on cardiovascular health and discuss diabetes medicines' mechanisms of action, indications, and potential side effects, along with strategies to optimise therapy based on patient needs. It will also highlight the management of patients with high cardiovascular risk, regardless of HbA1c levels, and the implications of the recent PBS listing change for dapagliflozin in December last year. Additionally, we’ll discuss appropriate patient education, including the use of medicines, troubleshooting common issues, and supporting adherence to treatment regimens. Learning objectives: 1. Describe oral and injectable medicines used in the management of Type 2 diabetes. 2. Identify the impact type 2 diabetes can have on cardiovascular health. 3. Discuss the role of the pharmacist in patient education of Type 2 diabetes. 4. Recognise considerations for managing patients with high cardiovascular risk, regardless of HbA1c levels. Biography

Deborah Hawthorne is a consultant pharmacist, recently elected as the chair of Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Consultant Pharmacist Community of Special Interest. She brings a wealth of knowledge from a varied career portfolio includes working as a pharmacist in GP clinics, Credentialed Diabetes Educator at Northeast Wangaratta Hospital, Home Medicines Reviews, Residential Medication Management Reviews, Chemical Restraint Consultations, Telehealth Medication Reviews, clinical education and research as an adjunct senior lecturer at the University of Western Australia.  She is also a current Victorian branch committee member of PSA and a board member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria (PSV). She has also been awarded PSA Consultant Pharmacist of the year 2023 and PSA Early Career Pharmacist of the year 2022.
