Australia's healthcare system is poised for transformation, with consultant pharmacists at the forefront. This presentation aims to equip the pharmacy profession with the insights needed to advocate for reforms that will enable consultant pharmacists to fully contribute to advancing patient care. Many existing barriers and limitations prevent pharmacists from working to their full potential —restrictive legislation, funding models, and traditional workforce structures. These hinder consultant pharmacists from fully utilising their expertise. We'll delve into the review's recommendations, including legislative changes, updated funding policies, and enhanced interprofessional collaboration, all designed expand the profession. Implementing these reforms, and others occurring across the health sector can lead to more efficient healthcare delivery, with consultant pharmacists playing a pivotal role in medicine management, chronic disease management, and patient education. Biography

Professor Lisa Nissen Director and Taylor Family Chair - Centre for Business and Economics of Health, University of Queensland. She has been a health practitioner, leader, educator, researcher, and implementation scientist in Australia for more than 25 years. Lisa’s research has led to major health system change, including the introduction of immunisation services by pharmacists throughout Australia and implementation of prescribing competencies and frameworks for health professionals nationally. More recently she led a Queensland team who implemented pharmacists’ treatment for Uncomplicated urinary Tract Infections. Her focus is on health service optimisation including scope of practice and Quality Use of Medicines. She is a Fellow of the both the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.
