This panel discussion explores how policy, regulation and on-the-ground practice intersect in the evolving aged care pharmacist landscape. Speakers will discuss implementation of the Aged Care Quality and Safety Standards, workforce development, and opportunities for interprofessional collaboration. Attendees will gain insights into how pharmacists are navigating regulatory expectations, integrating into care teams, and driving quality use of medicines across residential and community aged care settings. Kate Green is a Consultant and Aged Care Onsite Pharmacist based in Newcastle, NSW. She has a special interest in disability, informed by lived experience as a parent, and is an advocate for inclusive, person-centred care in both the community and residential aged care environments.

Candice is the Clinical Care Manager at Mayfield Aged Care, with 13 years of experience in aged care, including six years as a Registered Nurse. She is passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care and supporting residents with complex clinical needs. Candice is committed to strong clinical governance, staff mentorship, and fostering a collaborative team environment to ensure safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care.

Biography

Prof Mark Naunton is currently Chair of the Faculty of Health Board and Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Canberra where he teaches primarily in therapeutics and pharmacy practice. Mark was Head of the School of Health Sciences (2019-2025) where he managed a range of disciplines including social work, counselling, optometry, psychology, pharmacy, medical radiation science, and diagnostic pathology. His career spans academic, community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and accredited pharmacist in Tasmania, Northern Territory, and the ACT. Mark has extensive interests across the pharmacy profession and has worked internationally at the University of Groningen and Heerenveen Hospital in the Netherlands. He is credentialed to undertake medication reviews (previously held contracts with RACHs to perform RMMRs/QUM services), credentialed as an Aged Care Onsite Pharmacist (ACOP). Mark occasionally practices in community pharmacy. Mark’s research has focused on expanding the scope of practice of pharmacists and has supervised several PhD candidates in two relevant areas: evaluating the impact of pharmacists working in general practice and championed the research leading to the development of aged care onsite pharmacists. He previously undertook one of the first clinical trials in Australia evaluating the benefits of Home Medicine Reviews (HMRs) post-discharge and has contributed to important evaluations involve of community pharmacist screening and disease state management. Mark has served the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia for more than 25 years with roles including the Tasmanian PSA Branch committee (2000-2001), the South Australian/Northern Territory PSA Branch committee (2008-2010) and the PSA ACT branch committee since 2017. He has been a member of the PSA National Board since 2022 and graduated from the Australian Institute of Company Directors in the same year. Mark is passionate about medication safety and firmly believes pharmacists are uniquely positioned to improve the safe and effective use of medicines across all care settings.

Biography

Elise has extensive experience in the delivery and management of health-related projects across local and state government, and regulatory Commonwealth agencies including Comcare and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (the Commission). Elise has worked as a Senior Quality Assessor and Decision Maker for the Commission, providing a comprehensive understanding of aged care legislation, the Australian aged care system and issues impacting the sector including antimicrobial stewardship, the use of psychotropic and high-risk medications, and living with dementia. Elise is currently the Program Manager for the Commission’s Clinical Pharmacy Unit, overseeing the Pharmacy Outreach Program to support quality use of medications across the residential aged care sector. Elise has qualifications in Public Health, Project Management, and Government Investigations.

Biography

Peter Guthrey holds the position of Senior Pharmacist, Strategic Policy at the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. Peter supports policy development, advocacy activities, media, regulatory submissions and practice advice. Peter has driven key PSA policy work, including Pharmacists in 2023, Pharmacists in 2030 and PSA's medicine safety agenda, including PSA's flagship Medicine Safety report series. Peter has over 17 years’ experience in pharmacy policy, regulation, advocacy, quality management and community pharmacy practice. Peter maintains practice as a community pharmacist, working after-hours at Melbourne’s Ascot Vale Pharmacy.
