Biography
Prof. Mark Naunton is currently Chair of the Faculty of Health Board and Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Canberra where he teaches primarily in therapeutics and pharmacy practice. Mark was Head of the School of Health Sciences (2019-2025) where he managed a range of disciplines including social work, counselling, optometry, psychology, pharmacy, medical radiation science, and diagnostic pathology.
His career spans academic, community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and accredited pharmacist in Tasmania, Northern Territory, and the ACT. Mark has extensive interests across the pharmacy profession and has worked internationally at the University of Groningen and Heerenveen Hospital in the Netherlands. He is credentialed to undertake medication reviews (previously held contracts with RACHs to perform RMMRs/QUM services), credentialed as an Aged Care Onsite Pharmacist (ACOP). Mark occasionally practices in community pharmacy.
Mark’s research has focused on expanding the scope of practice of pharmacists and has supervised several PhD candidates in two relevant areas: evaluating the impact of pharmacists working in general practice and championed the research leading to the development of aged care onsite pharmacists. He previously undertook one of the first clinical trials in Australia evaluating the benefits of Home Medicine Reviews (HMRs) post-discharge and has contributed to important evaluations involve of community pharmacist screening and disease state management.
Mark has served the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia for more than 25 years with roles including the Tasmanian PSA Branch committee (2000-2001), the South Australian/Northern Territory PSA Branch committee (2008-2010) and the PSA ACT branch committee since 2017. He has been a member of the PSA National Board since 2022 and graduated from the Australian Institute of Company Directors in the same year.
Mark is passionate about medication safety and firmly believes pharmacists are uniquely positioned to improve the safe and effective use of medicines across all care settings.
